Lumens, IP ratings and load limits are all quoted honestly and still tell you very little on their own.
A lumen figure is a total, not a direction. Two fixtures quoting the same output can light a room completely differently depending on beam angle, and the angle is the number that is usually missing. Ask for it before you compare anything else.
IP ratings are honest and widely misread. The second digit covers water, and IP44 means splashing, not rain. A fixture that will sit outdoors overnight in British weather wants IP65 as a floor, and the cable gland matters as much as the housing.
Load limits are quoted for a static, evenly distributed weight on a level floor. A trestle rated at eighty kilos is not rated for eighty kilos of people leaning on one end of it. Halve the figure for anything a guest can touch and you will be about right.
